Arabica Coffee: A Comprehensive Guide!

Arabica Coffee

Perhaps you must have often seen coffee packages labeled “100% Arabica Coffee”. But, what is the reason behind such extensive promotion of Arabica coffee? Is it just hype or is Arabica indeed a better coffee variant? Here in this blog, we will cover everything you need to know about Arabica. Read till the end to know what is Arabica coffee, where Arabica coffee is grown, how is it different from other varieties, and why you should consider buying wholesale Arabica coffee beans.

What is Arabica Coffee?

Arabica coffee beans are obtained from the seeds of the Coffea arabica plant. Although these coffee beans initially originated in Ethiopia, the name ‘Arabica’ is derived from the Arabian Peninsula where it was first cultivated in. Specifically, Arabica coffee plants grow as tall as 12 meters, producing white flowers and fruits called cherry coffee.

The fruits contain two seeds that are extracted, washed, dried, and roasted to produce coffee beans. However, some coffee cherries consist of one seed instead of two. This is called peaberry and costs much more than usual Arabica coffee beans due to its rare availability.

Where is Arabica Coffee commonly grown?

Typically, Arabica coffee plants grow well in areas with higher elevations ranging from 800 meters to 2200 meters. Coffee plants cultivated in higher elevations produce premium quality coffee beans as it adds complex flavors and greater acidity to the coffee beans. For this reason, most coffee producers label the elevation data on their coffee packages. However, it’s worth noting that the higher the elevation, the slower will be the growth of coffee plants. Ultimately, it leads to lower production and higher costs of Arabica coffee beans.

Arabica coffee is mostly grown in the Coffee Bean Belt which is located between 25 degrees latitude north and 30 degrees south of the equator. However, growing the best quality coffee beans requires several other conditions than just the correct latitude. They require definite geographical, climate, and soil conditions. And the Coffee Bean Belt incorporates the best of all these conditions to grow fine quality coffee. The top coffee-growing countries include Brazil, Ethiopia, Colombia, Honduras, and Peru. Apart from these, coffee plants are also grown on the slopes of volcanoes since volcanic ash is rich in minerals like sodium, magnesium, zinc, iron,  calcium, sulfur, and copper.

How is Arabica Coffee different from other variants?

Arabica and Robusta are the two main types of coffee beans that are usually preferred by most coffee lovers across the globe. Although Robusta coffee plants produce higher yields than Arabica coffee, they cannot beat the taste of Arabica coffee. Since Arabica coffee contains 60% more lipids, they feature a more aromatic flavor than Robusta. Two other coffee variants like Liberica and Excelsa are quickly gobbling up the Asian markets but still, they are not as good in taste as Arabica coffee.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
